Swoop Baby — Newborn Tips

10 things that actually make a difference

You're both learning. These are the foundations that help everything else fall into place.

01

Connect through skin-to-skin

Lots of cuddles, talking, and eye contact. This is the foundation everything else is built on, and there's no such thing as too much of it in the early weeks.

02

Get feeding established first

Before anything else, focus on getting feeding right. Full, efficient feeds during the day lead to calmer evenings and longer stretches overnight. Everything flows from this.

03

Learn to swaddle well

A firm swaddle with arms down suppresses the startle reflex and is one of the most effective settling tools you have. It also makes techniques like shush pat far more effective. Dads tend to love mastering this one.

04

Stay on top of wake windows

Newborns can only handle 45-60 minutes of awake time in the early weeks. When you miss that window, overtiredness kicks in and settling gets much harder. Watch the clock alongside their cues.

05

Build gentle, predictable rituals

Babies thrive on routine and predictability. A simple, consistent wind-down before sleep: dim lights, a song, swaddle, into bed. It gives your bub the cues they need to settle more easily over time.

06

Try putting bub down drowsy but awake

When they're ready, pop them into the cot calm and drowsy. It takes the average person about 20 minutes to drift off, so give them time. This is how independent settling starts to develop.

07

Prioritise yourself

Rest when you can, eat well, and be kind to yourself. You're learning a new skill too. A depleted parent cannot show up the way they want to, so looking after yourself is part of looking after your baby.

08

Manage visitors on your terms

There's no rush to host. Don't hesitate to ask for practical help when people do come: a meal, a load of washing, someone to hold the baby while you shower. People want to help, let them.

09

Get outside every day

Fresh air, natural light, and movement. Good for your mood, good for your baby's circadian rhythm as it develops from around 6-8 weeks. Even a short walk makes a real difference.

10

Stop comparing. Start trusting yourself.

Every family's journey looks different. You are the expert on your baby. Trust your instincts, lean into what feels right, and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. You've got this. 💚
